COPD is a mix of chronic bronchitis and emphysema, both are responsible for a progressive airway obstruction.

Chronic bronchitis is chronic inflammation of the airways with a cough and sputum production. The inflammation causes scarring and narrows the airways while excess sputum production blocks the airways.

Emphysema destroys the alveoli where gas exchange is taking place. The elasticity of the smaller airways is lost and close during expiration. As a result, air is trapped in the smaller airways.

Therefore, airway obstruction is caused by
- excess mucus blocking the airways
- airway narrowing due to inflammation
- loss of elastic recoil causing air trapping

COPD appears in older age and is a result of smoking.

can you add some info on the volumes of air in lungs e.g. tidal volum, inspiratory reserve volume etc?
